Through
the Department of Prevention and Fight against Forest Fires, this
Institute began to devise an important plan to prevent and control
forest fires, particularly those which occur at the mountain range
area in the south of the country.
For that reason,
it was necessary to develop a warning and prevention programme involving
the acquisition of meteorological data for its subsequent analysis
in order to determine the areas of highest fire risk.
The system consisted
of 2 central stations and 2 networks of remote stations connected
to them.
The first network,
located at San Carlos de Bariloche, used VHF radio as a means of
communication.
The second one,
situated at Trevelin in the province of Chubut, was implemented,
due to the operating range, with stations which used radio communication
on the principle of meteoric cup reflections.
Each remote
station senses and processes parameters of wind velocity and direction,
air temperature and humidity, precipitation, solar radiation and
atmospheric pressure.
By means of
communication processors and computers, the central stations are
responsible for interrogating the remote stations and storing the
received data.
Apart from supplying
such networks with the necessary instruments, TECMES carried out
not only the installation and getting into operation by the ready-to-be-used
system but also maintenance tasks.
